Our popular intensive Oil Painting class equips beginners with the essentials to use this versatile paint medium to express their own ideas with confidence. This art experience is suitable for total beginners or intermediate and returning students.

Please note your work will take days to dry and can be left in our studio during the duration of your course syllabus.

 

* Please note Oil Painting is a longer process. If you are signing up for a single class, it is not meant to substutute for a full class course but will serve as a taster. In one single class you might not complete a paitning, so please manage your expectations.

Schedule:

In this inspiring course, you will:

  • Develop confidence in creating original fully realized paintings using your own personal subject matter: a picture or photo that means something to you or from observing still life arrangements.  Students are welcome to bring in still-life objects from home that inspire them or we can supply them if you prefer.
  • Learn to prime a canvas, outline your painting, and layer.
  • Learn how to blend on the canvas when working wet-in-wet to create values, gradients, or transitions. Oil Painting is a longer process, the paint remains wet for longer, allowing you more time to manipulate your work. 
  • Demo a range of brushstroke applications, for example how to paint using a dry brush to get more textural effects, which is perfect for highlighting.
  • Develop confidence in color mixing and choosing the correct palette for your subject to create mood and tone.
Requirements / Pre-Requisite:
  • Oil paint and the use of brushes are supplied 
  • CANVAS IS NOT INCLUDED IN YOUR COURSE FEE. Please purchase a canvas and bring it with you to class, we recommend a medium size canvas (11x14 or 12x17), to begin with. Canvas may be purchased at your local art store (support small businesses when you can!). Please note you may need more than one canvas for a full course pkg. 
  • A limited selection of canvases can also be purchased in our studio for $35 and upwards. If you are purchasing a canvas from our studio, payment is due at classtime; we do NOT offer IOU’s, so please have the exact change with you. 
  • Specialty supplies like glosses, glazes, or pouring mediums are NOT supplied; if you require these materials, please bring them with you to class.
