Maria’s teaching approach is to create a supportive and comfortable atmosphere. It is both body conscious and soul-freeing, leading students through a yogic style warm-up, a clear break-down of movements and a joyous learning experience of traditional dances.

Through her classes, students will expand their minds, bodies and experience a new passion.

West African dance is celebratory in its expression and Maria’s intention is to bring healing through sharing this art form with as many as she can reach.

I love this class! The teacher, Maria Young, is a beautiful dancer. And also an excellent TEACHER–she is excellent with breaking down the complex steps, so it’s a wonderful class for beginners. The vibe is warm neighborly and welcoming, there are usually live drummers, and the class is generally intimate enough for individualized attention.

This is a GREAT workout, too.

    Highly recommend!

The is West African Dance Class just rocks!!! I have been to group classes to small private classes with teacher, Maria Young. The classes are so super informative, high energy and the live drums kicks it up to another level. I would highly recommend Maria Young for private parties or your dance studio.

Maria creates such a warm and energetic dance class where your heart is pumping and you can’t stop smiling. She shares her wealth of knowledge and years experience of West African drum and dance in such a positive and inclusive way. You don’t want to miss your chance to dance with this fantastic and lovable teacher.

I’m not sure if there’s a name for a person who is uncoordinated almost to the extent of being developmentally disabled. But whatever it is, that’s me. I can’t move my left arm forward and my right leg to the side at the same time. Even when I see someone do it right in front of me. The more I think about it, the more impossible it gets. Obviously, this makes the prospect of attending any kind of dance class–foreboding. But, not this one! I actually had fun. I couldn’t keep up (and will never be able to keep up), but still had such a blast–I’m looking forward to next time. Go figure. This is, in part, because it’s good exercise in a clean, airy space with big windows and a cushy white canvas mat-covered floor. Also, because the other people in the class are patient and nice and it feels like a purely uplifting way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The live drummers make a huge difference and keep things moving. But, most of all, it is because of the teacher–Maria. She is abundantly graceful. Firm, patient, empathetic, and somehow manages to create a completely warm and welcoming vibe. It’s a safe place for beginners and (I’d imagine) and really fun class for people with more advanced skills. Highly recommend.
